Job Summary

Oversee and develop customer specific chemical solutions.  As a Senior Technical Specialist, you will recommend and develop innovative chemical solutions that tie directly into a customer’s process.  These solutions will utilize existing products as well as require new product development.  These solutions will need to be tested and proven in a laboratory environment prior to being presented to a customer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement testing procedures: Design and develop accurate and reliable testing methodologies for chemical analysis, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Oversee chemical testing: Conduct complex chemical analyses of raw materials, finished products, and environmental samples, using various analytical techniques and instruments. This includes directing the lab on product modifications and new formulations using testing methods this role establishes
  • Data analysis and reporting: Analyze test results, interpret data, and prepare comprehensive reports detailing findings and recommendations for further action.
  • Research and development: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in chemical analysis techniques and technologies and develop innovative approaches to improve laboratory operations and efficiency.
  • Team leadership and management: develop a team of chemists in the lab, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to foster a high-performing and collaborative work environment.
  • Collaboration with other departments: Work closely with other departments to provide technical expertise, support product development, and ensure product quality and safety.
  • Ensure compliance: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards related to chemical testing and safety, and ensure compliance with all applicable requirements.
  • Budget management: Monitor and control laboratory expenses, develop and manage budgets, and make recommendations for the procurement of laboratory equipment and supplies.

Must Have Competencies:

  • Advanced understanding of metal finishing systems and processes.
  • Experienced in recommending and formulating metal cleaners and pretreatments.
  • Knowledgeable in next generation metal pretreatment technology
  • Basic understanding of metallurgy
  • Knowledgeable about environmental challenges regarding metal finishing
  • Basic understanding of industrial water treatment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent knowledge of laboratory techniques, instruments, and analytical methods
  • Proficient in data analysis and interpretation
  • Effective leadership and team management abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Knowledge of quality control principles and procedures
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient in computer software and data management systems
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and regulations
  • Comfort level in production settings due to onsite customer collaboration/support that may occur as much as 25% of the time, particularly for start-ups.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in a senior or leadership or research role in the metal-finishing industry
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related field, a Master’s or Ph.D. is preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of metal cleaning chemical analysis techniques and instrumentation
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards, regulations, and safety protocols
  • Strong understanding of quality control principles and practices
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Proficient in computer software and data analysis tools
  • Certification or licensure as a Chemist may be required, depending on local regulations and industry standards.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; reach above shoulders; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud. Occasional weekend work is required.  Hours range from 8-10 per day.
